This past weekend, my family and I had so much fun spending a morning at Mac Woods Dune Rides on Lake Michigan. With its breathtaking scenery of Lake Michigan and rich history, it’s no wonder that this year marks their 95th season of offering unforgettable dune rides. I hope this information helps you plan a super fun adventure with friends and family! Make sure to check out my practical tips for families listed at the end of this post!
The History of Silver Lake Dunes
Located on the coast of Lake Michigan, Silver Lake Sand Dunes stretch over 2,000 acres, owned by the state of Michigan, while Mac Woods operates on a leased 450 acres. The dunes were formed in a fascinating way: after the Great Chicago Fire, loggers moved north along the coast of Lake Michigan, cutting down trees and exposing the sandy soil beneath, paving the way for the attraction we know as Mac Woods Dune Rides today. This created the stunning landscape we see today, but it also sparked a significant conservation effort to plant dune grass, which helps stabilize the dunes and combat erosion.

Our Mac Woods Dune Ride Adventure
The dune ride itself lasted about 40 minutes and was perfect for our entire family, accommodating guests of all ages. It was delightful to see our toddler’s excitement navigating the multiple hills. Mac Woods ensures a family-friendly experience, even for the littlest members of the family! Parents can bring their own baby carriers or use those provided by Mac Woods (more on that in the “Practical Tips” section at the end of the post.
One of the highlights was stopping at the beach, where we enjoyed a photo opportunity with the dune scooter, the sparkling Lake Michigan, and the iconic Mac Woods Dune Rides wooden chair. The panoramic views of rolling sand dunes and water extended as far as we could see.
Silver Lake Dunes Insights from Our Tour Guide
Our tour guide shared an engaging historical overview of Silver Lake Dunes and Mac Woods Dune Rides on Lake Michigan. He explained how the sandy expanse developed after the loggers cut down the dense forests and the importance of conservation efforts of the dunes which followed. We also learned about fulgurite, or “petrified lightning,” which are natural glass tubes formed when lightning strikes the sand—one of the few places in the country where fulgurite is found.
We also got to know about the Piping Plovers, an endangered bird species that nests on the dunes in July. Due to conservation regulations, some rides in July may take alternate routes to avoid disturbing their nests, though these routes still offer stunning views of Lake Michigan.

Historical Treasures of Mac Woods Dune Rides
Mac Woods also has a nice museum set up that you can check out after your ride. An impressive nine-foot-long fulgurite can be found, as well as a collection of historical dune scooters, including a 1934 Ford Dune Scooter, a 1960 Studebaker Scooter, and a 1968 International Scooter. Old photographs and signs decorated the museum, providing a fun glimpse into the past.
It’s easy to see why Mac Woods Dune Rides boasts a 4.9-star rating on Google with over 4,000 reviews. This special activity has been a part of my life from childhood, and now I’m thrilled to share it with my own children. Thank you, Mac Woods, for helping us create everlasting memories!

practical tips for families on mac woods Dune rides
Wear a Sturdy Baby Carrier (no strollers allowed).
The ride involves fast and bumpy hills, so you need a secure, close to body baby carrier such as my Baby Bjorn that you can see in the pics (I am obsessed with this carrier- only one I have ever used!). Front facing, of course, so you can stabilize your little one with your arms as needed. Then, you can decide if it is better for them to face in or out. Another rec that I have for you is my all-time fave baby sun hat for UV protection for my girls.
Secure All Loose Items
Hats, sunglasses, pacifiers, sippy cups and phones can easily fly off during windy or fast sections of the ride.
Hats and sunglasses add nice UV protection on the light-reflective dunes, just make sure they are extra secure!
Consider a zipped tote or backpack to store essential items safely.
Bring Hand Sanitizer Wipes, Water and a Snack
While it’s not super messy, the sand and wind can least hands and faces dusty. Little ones will likely be ready for a drink of water and a snack after the ride. I love having these individually wrapped hand sanitizer wipes for use before enjoying a snack at the picnic tables that are conveniently located where the ride lets off.
Make It a Teachable Moment
Kids love hearing the stories about the dunes. Make sure to ask your driver questions- they are great storytellers with fun facts that engage kids of all ages.
Bring Cash to Tip Your Driver
They do a great job and will surely appreciate it!
Arrive Early During Peak Season
There are no reservations (except for charter bus tours and school groups), so wait times can get long during peak season, especially mid-day. Early morning and late afternoon rides are less crowded, but I would strongly recommend getting there first thing in the morning if you have little ones. We were able to ride right away at about 9 am before they got busy, and we were so glad!
Dress in Layers
The dunes can feel cool with wind, even on warm days. Bring a light jacket or windbreaker.
Take a Pre-Ride Bathroom Break
The ride lasts about 40 minutes and there are no restrooms along the way.
Stop at the restroom near the ticket area before boarding
Hold On During Turns
Each row has a metal bar to hold onto. Make sure kids (and adults) are gripping it, especially during sharper turns.
Prep Little Ones Ahead of Time
The ride is fast and fun but can be surprising! Let kids know it’s bumpy like a roller coaster, but safe. They are sure to enjoy the wind in their hair, fun storytelling and views of Lake Michigan if they are mentally prepared.
Keep Young Kids Toward the Center of the Bench
For toddlers and preschoolers, it’s safest to seat them between two adults or near the middle of the vehicle (away from the edges).
